- Akinlabi Mason known to most as azealot is one of the founding members of Brown Monkey Music. Born in the Bronx during the 70's azealot was exposed to many different forms of music and culture. The son of a educational reformer he was surrounded by brilliant thinkers that helped shape the changing the cultral landscape of New York. At the age of five azealot is given a gift rappers delight by the sugar hill gang this album would change his life. Azealot feels a connection between himself and this new form of music. Rap offers him and many others an oppurtuinty to express themselves in a way that offers them extradinary freedom. Surrounded by b-boys,grafitti,dJs, New York becomes the cradle for this new reveloution. As times goes on the music changes from self expression to self explotion Azealot decides to do something about it. On june 14 1996 inside a small row house in baltimore, a company called freeslave is formed to combat the lose of cultral and knowledge besetting the once proud community of hip-hop. Using the power of the inter-net Freeslave attempts to rip off the chains of oppression and ignorance that had shackled the minds of many people. Freeslave became a force of positive change and became a vehicle for local artist and intellectuals to share thier talents with the world. This cultural experiment would be short lived as azealot and other members of the movement were arrested and thier headquaters were destroyed. In 2005 the movement was reborn in the form of brown Monkey Music, with the help of shelby Wallace the vision was reshaped to include all forms of art and music.
